Alexa Storms is a 24-year-old singer/songwriter based in Kansas City, Missouri. Timid by nature, Storms has overcome obstacles through the power of music and finding her own voice.
As a child, Storms developed a love for singing after being exposed to Christian hymns and contemporary worship music. At home, Storms listened to gospel, soul, R&B, jazz, and classical. Singing beautiful melodies in church and listening to soulful singers at home encouraged Storms to learn more about the human voice and how music can evoke emotions. Upon entering the public-school system in 2005, Storms was able to take various music classes, which inspired her dream of becoming a singer.
Storms continued to sing in church and became a member of her church’s praise team in 2009. From 2011 to 2013, Storms competed in the MSHSAA Music Festival at the district and state levels. Storms was able to gain confidence by regularly performing in front of an audience.
After graduating from high school in 2013, Storms entered college as an education major. After a year into the education program, Storms decided she did not want to become a teacher and switched her major to undecided. She began to study voice in 2014 under Dr. Shawn Hallis. Storms continued to perform publicly at recitals and student showcases.
After obtaining her Associate of Arts degree in 2015, Storms took a hiatus from university to figure out what she wanted to pursue for a career. During her hiatus, Storms recorded and uploaded covers to her YouTube channel and Soundcloud page. She has covered songs in both English and Korean. Storms also became a founding member of ApollA, a dance crew that covers Korean pop songs.
In October 2016, Storms was recruited by Clarence Smith to join the Penn Valley Jazz Band. Excited about a new adventure, Storms joined the band as a vocalist. She had the opportunity to perform alongside other talented musicians at The Phoenix and Gem Theater in Kansas City.
In April 2017, Storms applied to the University of Central Missouri (UCM) to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Technology. She was accepted and began classes in August of that year. While at UCM, Storms has studied music composition and theory, electronic music production, and piano. She also studied voice under Dr. Jacob Sentgeorge. Storms has performed with the New Technologies Ensemble for a year and is currently a member of the University Concert Choir.
On May 5, 2019, Storms premiered her first original composition, “I Forgive You,” to the public at the Student Composition Concert. “I Forgive You” is about forgiving someone who is toxic and may not deserve to be forgiven. The song was well received and has inspired Storms to compose more music. Storms is currently working on an album and plans to release it before she graduates in May 2020. Storms firmly believes that without music, she would not have had the courage to be where she is today. Some of Storms’ favorite artists and producers are MercyMe, Tenth Avenue North, Lecrae, Yuna, Dean, Gray, Sunmi, Alicia Keys, pH-1, Taeyeon, Miso, Olivia Ong, and IU.
